To know what a coquette is we have to look back on the nymphet aesthetic or sub-culture
of the 2010s that originated it
What is a nymphet
Nymphet is a term borrowed from Vladimir Nabokov book lolita describing the protagonist's obsession with young minor girls the difference between the book and the subculture is that a man isn’t labeling them but the girls are labeling themselves and taking back their girlhood in a way were they all connected to each other making it more than an aesthetic but a subculture
The aesthetic of the 90s-2010s nymphets
The nymphets of the 2010s and the mainstream coquette of today are very different to say the least aesthetics of nymphet are vintage inspired from all decades mainly the 50s and 60s Americana
Using actual patterns and silhouettes of teen girls clothings from previous decades with a flirtatious twist
What is a coquette
In simple terms, a coquette is the rebranding of a nymphet after the tag was banned on tumblr and other social media sites taking the traits of nymphets to find a new term a coquette a French word for flirtatious but that’s not exactly translated to the mainstream coquettes instead of taking flirtatious roots it expanse upon an angelic aesthetic which makes it look like more of an embodiment of purity culture instead of a flirtatious women
Thesis
while most coquette still use nymphet motives the mainstream and biggest creators do not which draws the biggest difference between nymphet and coquette making it more than just a rebranding
